The Student Medical Centre is a fully equipped Health
Centre operating as a General Practice, and provides a friendly and
confidential service for Otago Polytechnic students. There are doctors
in attendance each day and an After Hours service is also available.
Practice Nurse Clinics provide services for minor illnesses, repeat
prescriptions, smears, and vaccination services, as well as advice
on a wide variety of health issues and referral to a doctor when necessary.
The team at the Student Medical Centre has a strong commitment to
Health Promotion to help you stay healthy.
The Student Services Fee and your Community
Services Card help fund this service. We ask that you apply
for your Community Services Card as soon as you commence your
studies, so that we can continue to provide this service. Consultations
are free with your Community Services Card.
Please note: for all services some associated
costs may apply - please ask at Reception
NURSING SERVICES
Is a free and confidential service by appointment only between
9.00 am – 4.30 pm Monday - Friday. Services include:
• treatment of accidents and injuries – ACC providers
• sexual health, contraception advice and pregnancy testing
• cervical screening
• assessment and advice of minor illness
• vaccinations/travel advice
• wellness assessment and health monitoring
• wound care and dressing
MEDICAL SERVICES
By appointment only between 9.00 am – 4.30 pm Monday to
Friday. Cost is FREE to ACC and Community Services Card holders, and $15 to those without. Associated costs will apply to some services such as minor surgery, some dressings, travel immunisations etc, please ask at Reception.
Services include all of the above plus:
• minor surgery
• referral to other medical agencies in the community
• treatment for acute illness or injury
• prescriptions
To get the most out of your studies, you need
to be healthy, both physically and emotionally. Student Health
provides a confidential service, expected at a normal General
Practice, to all eligible students with a registered nurse and
doctor in attendance each week day. There may be up to three
doctors and two nurses in attendance including both male and
female doctors
Your Student Health levy and Community Services
Card help fund this service. So that this can continue, we ask
that you apply for your card as soon as you commence your studies.
NB: Student Health is a non-profit organisation and therefore
prompt payment of accounts helps keep the service going. We are happy
to send out accounts but request that these are paid within 14 days.
If not, a $3 administration fee is added to the total. If you need
longer please talk to Reception.
It is important that we have your current contact
details. Please contact us directly if you change address or
phone number.
Appointments are 15 minutes. If you require
longer or have multiple enquires please let reception know when
booking and additional charges will apply.
We ask that if you are unable to attend your
appointment to please phone and advise us so we can give that
appointment time to someone else that needs to be seen. Failure
to let us know will result in a charge being added onto your
account.
We have a strong commitment to provide continuity
of care, so we are happy for you to see the same staff member
each time you visit. Please remember that not everyone works
every day so you many need to wait a day or two to see the medical
staff of your choice, and it is no problem if you see 1 or 2
others until you find someone you feel comfortable with.
It is not our policy to do prescriptions or
give out test results over the phone. You need to make an appointment
for these.
